"How Far We've Come" (Interactivity #2) (2)

With the advancements in technology, soon enough students won't know how to do anything by hand and they will solely rely on technology to do everything for them.

  1. Shelby, I think this picture is a great representation as to how advanced our technology has become and how it has impacted our educational systems. Even just with computers, students are already relying on the internet to spoon feed them everything they need to know for homework assingments or research papers. This, perhaps, adds to the ever present laziness that is presented by the majority of today's students. What will happen in the future if there is a piece of technology that will do everything for them so that they don't even have to lift a finger to even click a button? Do you think it is safe to rely on technology this much? While it is beneficial in some aspects, should we, as future teachers, remind our students that technology is not always reliable, as well as maybe limit technology in the classroom to reduce their laziness and unwillingness to do things that cannot be done electronically?

  2. Shelby,
I really liked the accuracy of the picture you chose. I look at the way that society is today and I wonder how everything came to be the way that it is. I think that the evolution of technology happened so gradually and was implemented so seamlessly that it was difficult to see the drastic changes. Students today only want to use their cell phones or their laptops to gain information or to find answers. I know that I personally have found it easier to just watch the video lectures that my professors post rather than actually attending the class where they will be saying the same thing. Technology effects us all and sometimes we don't even know it.

  3. Shelby,

I LOVE that picture...I was looking for something similar for my blog but I completely agree. There is a level of laziness that technology has given to this particular generation. Students do not value hard work - like actually going to a library to do research.

While I of course love the ease of researching from my laptop or my iPhone, I would like to make sure my students understand the value of doing their own research.

  4. Shelby,

Your graphic was truly inspiring to me as an aspiring educator. We will be fighting technology heavily to consistently impact our students effectively. It will be hard when so much of technology is present inside and outside a classroom that can be used to assist their learning by helping them "spoon feed" themselves. These shortcuts are similar to Lizz's graphic and have benefits and many disadvantages at the same time. I hope that students will see the advantages that are present to them to assist with learning, but that they cannot be their primary means of attaining understanding. They must never stop questioning and we must be present to help bring understanding and answers to those questions they formulate. How do plan to combat this as an educator? Any suggestions because I am equally nervous as to how I will deal with this...
